The Poco F3 was introduced more than a year ago. Since then, the old spearhead of the Poco series has mercilessly dominated the middle class: A 120Hz AMOLED display paired with a high-performance processor, full connectivity and a good camera were sometimes available for less than €250. This price/performance ratio left few arguments to recommend a smartphone other than the Poco F3. Now Xiaomi has introduced the Poco F4, which should build on the success of its predecessor. The display and processor remain the same, but there is an upgrade for the camera and improvements in detail. In this announcement, we tell you everything you need to know about the Poco F4.

Design & Display
The Poco F4 gets the angular design that has become popular in 2022, which we already know from the Redmi Note 11 series. The smartphone will be available in green, silver and black colors. It has dimensions of 163 x 76 x 7.7 millimeters with a weight of 195 grams. We can’t say for sure whether the back is made of glass or plastic. However, we suspect glass, because the Chinese Redmi K40S is identical in terms of dimensions and weight. In any case, it is certain that the Front protected by Gorilla Glass 5 becomes. There is one on the right Power button with integrated fingerprint scanner and the volume rocker. Unfortunately, the Poco F4 does not have a headphone jack. To connect headphones, you either have to use Bluetooth or an adapter for the USB-C 2.0 port To fall back on. At least Xiaomi has given the Poco F4 an infrared transmitter again. There is also stereo speakers again.
The Poco F4 relies on a current one Samsung E4 AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a size of 6.67 inches. You hardly have to say much more about it, because the display belongs in the price range and real flagships only differentiate themselves with a higher resolution or with LTPO technology (variable refresh rate). The first is superfluous anyway and the second is aimed at better battery life. The display is HDR-ready, has a 20:9 aspect ratio and, according to Xiaomi, achieves a Brightness up to 1300 lux. The latter is an excellent value, which we already know from the predecessor.
The design has changed, the display has essentially remained the same. The stereo speakers, which support watching videos and ensure better sound, are also included again. Opinions could differ when it comes to the angular design.
Performance & System
The processor is responsible for a lot more in a mobile phone than you might think at first glance. Speed isn’t the only thing that matters. The processor ensures, among other things, reception, battery life and also has a significant influence on the camera quality. The processor is ultimately the heart of a smartphone. The choice of Snapdragon 870 for the Poco F4 5G is therefore also a good choice in 2022. A look at our leaderboard shows that smartphones with a Snapdragon 870 processor, such as the Poco F3 or the Realme GT Neo 2, still take the top spots. The new mid-range Qualcomm chips can’t keep up with the slightly older Snapdragon 870. Below you can see the benchmarks of seven smartphones with the Snapdragon 870 chipset:
3D Mark (Slingshot)
Heat development also played a major role with this Qualcomm chip. Poco is aware of this problem. A special cooling system called Liquid Cool Technology 2.0 is designed to protect the Poco F4 5G from overheating. For a top performance is of course also faster than an arrow UFS 3.1 memory and latest LPDDR5 RAM installed in the Poco F4. There is a version with 6/128GB and a version with 8/256GB. As a system comes current Android 12 with MIUI 13 surface to use.
The following cameras are installed in the Poco F4:
- Main camera: 64 megapixels, 1/2″; 1.4μm (4-in-1 Super Pixel); ƒ/1.79, 6P lens, OIS
- Ultra wide-angle camera: 8 megapixels, 1.12μm; ƒ/2.2; FOV 119°
- Macro camera: 2 megapixels, 1.75μm; ƒ/2.4
- Front selfie camera: 20 megapixels, ƒ/2.45
The biggest upgrade here is the Main camera with optical image stabilization. For Xiaomi, the OIS stabilization is an important step, because you can now find it more and more often with the competition in the price range from €300. The stabilization has a positive effect on night shots and also supports recording videos without stuttering.
Based on the specs, we would expect an Omnivision OV64B as the main sensor. At the same time, the processor will allow stabilized 4K recordings. Only the test will show how good the UWW camera is. However, you should not expect much from the 2MP macro camera.
The main camera is the focus of mid-range smartphones. With optical image stabilization, Poco provides the right upgrade to its predecessor. If the software optimization fits, the Poco F4 should take a good step forward in image quality. Of course, we can only judge whether the calculation works after the test.
Connectivity & Battery
When it comes to connectivity, modern standards await us and the Snapdragon 870 has it too 5G reception ready. The Poco F4 is of course a Dual SIM smartphone, but without the possibility of memory expansion. The following mains frequencies are available and enable problem-free use beyond the borders of Europe:
- 4G: LTE FDD: B1/2/3/4/5/7/8/12/17/18/19/20/26/28/38/40/41
- 5G (NSA ; SA): n1/3/5/7/8/20/28/38/40/41/77/78
With it you’ll get Bluetooth 5.2 and WiFi 6, i.e. current standards. A NFC chip for contactless payment is also available. Poco does not yet provide any information about the supported GPS systems, nor about the built-in sensors. However, we estimate that Xiaomi will not have forgotten anything important here. In addition, the defective proximity sensors of the predecessor should have been cleared out.
The battery of the Poco F4 measures 4500mAh and is therefore just as large as the battery in the predecessor. The Poco F3 already had decent battery life, so that’s not going to change much. However, there is an upgrade for the charging speed: instead of 33 watts, you can now loaded with 67 watts will. According to the press release, the Poco F4 only needs 38 minutes.
price and appraisal
The Poco F4 starts with the following RRP of €400 for the 6/128GB version and €450 for the 8/256GB version. As always, there will soon be offers here where you can get the Poco F4 much cheaper. Right from the release on June 27th to July 2nd, the smartphone will be sold with an early bird discount of €50 on Amazon and po.co. The discount price of €350 for the 6/128GB version and €400 for the 8/256GB version is more realistic and should tempt some Xiaomi fans to order. It’s also just nice to see that Poco doesn’t go along with the current moon price policy of many other manufacturers.
In any case, we are delighted that there is finally a successor to the Poco F3. With an OIS-stabilized main camera, Xiaomi has started at exactly the right point. There are also a few small upgrades, such as faster loading speed and stereo speakers. We will get a test device as soon as possible and tell you more about the Poco F4 soon.
