As part of the study, more than 200 decision-makers from German companies that already use machine learning were surveyed in March 2022.
According to the study, almost half of those surveyed plan to optimize the ML systems used. 41 percent want to increase the use and expand to other industries.
Advantages and main areas of application
Machine learning is currently used primarily in quality assurance and control (37 percent of the companies surveyed). Other fields of application are logistics and inventory expansion (25 percent), optimization of the production process (24 percent) and predictive maintenance (24 percent).
Around 45 percent of those surveyed named cost savings as an advantage when using machine learning. According to the study, the other advantages include production optimization (42 percent), productivity increase (41 percent), process acceleration (34 percent) and employee relief (32 percent).
help with implementation
Of the production companies surveyed, 98 percent stated that they were dependent on external service providers to implement their plans in the area of ML technologies.
The study participants gave the lack of expertise in the area of ML models and tools as well as a shortage of skilled workers as reasons.
