Forget deepfakes, new photo editing AI is beyond imagination

The technology continues to evolve. AI-generated content has now become deceptively real. At first glance, many of the images produced can no longer be distinguished from real images. So be careful what you come across on the web. You should not blindly trust your eyes with every work. The creations of this new photo editing AI are beyond imagination.

Another AI in action DALL-E 2

DALL-E 2 is another AI that has gained attention for image generation on the Internet. Similar to Artflow.ai or Google’s Imagen, it generates content based on text input by users. This creates realistic images and works of art on which the AI was programmed using learning content. DALL-E 2 is a continuation of DALL-E and is operated as a project to research machine learning. No commercial use is therefore planned for this software in the future.

However, it is possible to use them for private purposes – and this could lead to further problems. DALL-E 2 limits access for first-time users to a certain test contingent. Ultimately, however, it cannot be ruled out that one of the future users will use the generated content somewhere for questionable purposes. The project itself seems to be aware of this, as it reserves the right to reject applications from users who present such a risk of use. This can at least reduce the risk, if not avoid it.

New photo editing AI with great power

The performance of DALL-E 2 is impressive. The new image processing AI is able to generate realistic 8K shots of animals or places that are difficult to distinguish from an original. The creation of many generated works of art, which are based on the drawing style of other paintings, is also easily possible. To achieve this, the operators of the software fed DALL-E 2 with lots of learning material to teach the AI to recreate important characteristics of people, animals, places and works of art.

The type of connection with the words is also decisive. Finally, the AI must understand what users expect from it when they speak of “photos”, “dogs” or “paintings”. The potential that DALL-E 2 offers is very promising. But precisely because of the realistically generated content, the risk of someone misusing the created images could be great. DALL-E 2 itself provides each generated image with a color code as a signature in the lower right corner. However, it is not difficult to remove these and reduce the image if someone wanted to use the product for other purposes.

It’s not the AI’s fault for your intended use

Despite all the criticisms of generating or modifying content on AI, it should be made clear that the technologies themselves do not determine their intended use. With the help of machine learning and AI, a lot of useful and helpful creations can be created. Unfortunately, however, there will always be people who use such a tool in an attempt to gain an advantage. Be it that manipulated recordings of another person appear as a deepfake to harm the person or a manipulated fundraising appeal collects the money of many bona fide helpers.

That’s why it’s even more important that you remain vigilant and skeptical about content on the internet. How likely is it that the person depicted actually does what is depicted? Is there evidence of a promoter or owner of the page where the content is available? Be suspicious if your gut feeling gives you suspicions or if you come across something unexpected. Pay close attention to the appropriate lighting conditions in the pictures and look for discrepancies. As creatures that process a lot of visual data, we often already have a subconscious idea that something is wrong. However, what exactly is irritating with a depiction often only becomes clear on closer inspection. You should also be skeptical about video recordings if only a very small vocabulary is used and rigid facial expressions are presented.
